Gia Singh Arora is an experimental filmmaker-artist, performer and dancer, who completed her undergraduate studies from Ashoka University studying English Literature and Performing Arts.
Her current work tries to capture and navigate dance on film rather than on the stage. Her interest in film is marked by how to best allow the body to share its story beyond verbal expression.
Gia is also a trained Odissi dancer, and has performed at festivals such as Yoga Pela Paz, Brazil, ISKCON, Mumbai and Girnar Festival, Gujarat.
She’s currently working on an independent project titled ‘The Performance Room’ which invites people to experience a subjective reality through improvised movement by using the somatic movement practice. A part of this project was showcased at the Irregulars Art Fair, Delhi. Through her literature program she presented a paper titled, ‘Balancing Acts: In between Hinduism and Hindutva’ claiming that classical dance has the ability to resist the singular political and religious narratives in a time when stillness and fixity is causing cultural unrest.
She is also a member of the team at a production house, DJ’s A Creative Unit, working in the creative team to research, ideate and develop stories for digital platforms.
Gia is hoping to continue her exploration of performance and dance through the medium of film, by moving away from conventional storytelling tropes and experiencing reality through her own mindful subjectivity.
Gia is Ekavalli’s ‘Fall‘ initiative author.
